Electoral:
  • Non-partisan election for 4-year term (2006, 2010, 2014, ...)
District Characteristics:
  • District 5 is a diverse school district containing children of varying economic backgrounds and languages, but I think the needs of District 5 mirror the needs of the whole school district.
Responsibilities:
  • I'd say the most important responsibility is to stay abreast of what is happening in the school district and to give well prepared and thoughtful responses to issues that we face.
Qualifications:
  • First of all the person must live and vote in the district. Also, the person should be knowledgeable about educational trends and issues, be able to listen to people, and to be thoughtful in considering the issues, and to be able to articulate a response that can be understood by the board and the community.
Time Required:
  • That varies week to week and month to month, but I'd say between 5 and 10 hours a week. If there's a board retreat or conference it will be more time. We usually don't schedule meetings for July.
Top Issues:
  • reducing the high school drop out rate
  • improving student achievement
  • recruiting and retaining qualified teachers
Advice to Voters:
  • They should vote for the best qualified candidate. Since I'm not running for another term of office, I suggest citizens ask good qustions and consider the answers of the two candidates. Although District 5 is the only district where there will be a vote in November 2006, I hope there will be forums where citizens can hear the voices of the candidates.
